RENTAL CAR

Renting a car

When visiting the islands in Hawaii, most travelers will want to rent their own car, especially when staying on the Neighboring Islands. If visitors are staying on the islands of Oahu and Honolulu, especially in downtown Waikiki, renting a car may not be necessary due to the close location of attractions and use of the city`s public transportation. Having a car on the bigger islands may cause more of a hassle with hotels charging guests to pay for parking, sometimes this charge can be up to $40 per day.

In Hawaii, they drive on the right-hand side of the road, just like America making it simple and straightforward. The roads on the islands are well signposted and the speed limits are posted in miles per hour (mph). Hawaii features freeways, just like America, which are some of the busiest roads, especially in Oahu and the other major cities.

Drivers must be at least 25 years old to rent a car in Hawaii and provide a valid driver`s license and a major credit card in their name. There may be a few rental car companies that will rent to younger drivers (21-24) with a surcharge that could cost up to an additional $30 per day.

The main airports in Hawaii have major rental car agencies available. Some of the islands feature independent agencies such as Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and Thrifty.
